Ambrym is one of the most volcanically active islands on Earth, with two summit calderas — Benbow and Marum — containing permanent lava lakes. The multi-day trek across the ash plain to view them is regarded as one of the ultimate volcano expeditions in the Pacific.
The summit of Gaua contains a crater lake — Lake Letas — which surrounds an active volcanic cone. The combination of steaming fumaroles, acidic lake water, and dense forest makes the ascent a surreal and other-worldly experience.
